Paying for things in China: a first-timer’s guide
China runs on mobile payments. At many small shops, noodle stalls and taxis you’ll see a QR code where you might expect a card reader.
The good news is that international visitors can link their own Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay. Download the app before you fly, switch it to English, verify your passport, add your card and make a small test payment. If it’s declined, call your bank before you travel.
Shopping in big cities? Ask stores for a tax refund. The minimum purchase is now ¥200, and many shops offer instant refunds. Carry a little cash as a backup.
